Facsimile print from the 1985 art book "Das Goldene Paradies" (The Golden Paradise). Sourced from a 12th century French Bible manuscript leaf made in the monastery of St. Amand which artfully spells "Adam". Serpent beasts twist around each other to form an "A" while the rest of the letters are printed below. The background is filled with vines which tangle animals, humans, and hybrids of the two. All of these gorge on sickly-green fruit, apparently without pleasure. The name "Adam" superimposed on a demonic feast may be intended to remind the viewer of Adam's sin in eating the fruit of the Knowledge of Good and Evil as well as connect it to the broader sin of Gluttony. Above the illumination is the scribe's signature, which when translated from Latin reads "Savvalo the monk from St. Amand made this". The original gilding is beautifully recreated with real silver and 23.5k gold which reflects light exquisitely. The piece is framed between a thick slab of clear plastic and board. Glued to the back of the board is a three-page German document which details the history surrounding the piece and an examination of its contents and symbolism. A brilliant piece for any enthusiast of Medieval society and art. Size: 11.75" X 15.75" Condition: See pictures.
