Description
Signed WWII US Paratrooper American Flag oilcloth armband. These were worn exclusively by US paratroopers for easy identification from the ground and during landing. The flag on the front possesses 48 stars. Both original bobby pins are attached at the end. On the interior is written “Southern France landed Aug. 16 1944 St. Tropez – St. Maxime”. The date is one day after the commencement of Operation Dragoon, the Allied landing in Southern France which supported Operation Overlord (D-Day). Based on the locations mentioned, this paratrooper was a member of the 3rd airborne battalion, well-seasoned from their participation in the Italian campaign, which landed in St. Tropez and later rendezvoused with the 45th airborne in St. Maxine. A unique item from a lesser known but crucial undertaking during French liberation.
