Description
Antique family Bible published in the 1860s. Features a 40-page historical, philosophical, cultural, and theological gloss on ancient cultures by Albert Rawson (reflective of scholarly perspectives of that time, of course), a commentary on the Old Testament by Robert Jamieson, and a brief commentary on the New Testament by Edward Bickersmith. Throughout there are prints imitating works by Gustav Dore, Raphael, and more. As this is a family Bible, there are pages marked off for marriages, births, deaths, and more. There are also family paraphernalia such as newspaper clippings and military flags, which have been left as is given that this is a piece of 19th-20th century American family history as well as a historical document. There is also a damaged copy of “The Jesus Letter” a fabrication from the 1700s which proliferated in American newspapers in the 19th century as an early chain letter. The Bible is leather-bound with deep decorative elements. The front cover is partially detached but the back cover is intact. There are two large metal clasps which can close the cover. The edges of the pages are gold-gilt and there is a fabric bookmark attached to the spine. A beautiful piece for believers, historians, antiquarians, or the curious. 14.2 lbs.
