Museum quality signed UN presentation piece from the historic December 1951 failed demilitarization mission made by Habib Joo & Sons- the official state jewelers to the maharajas of Kashmir.
This box captures a tragic and historic turning point. Just one week before Christmas, on December 18, 1951, the chief UN mediator, Dr. Frank Graham, officially reported to the UN Security Council that the demilitarization mission had failed. The United Nations mission in Kashmir in December 1951 was to stop a war between India and Pakistan and organize a free, democratic vote (a plebiscite) so the people of Kashmir could decide which country they wanted to join.
Signed by global narcotics expert Helen Howell, members of the UNMOGIP, and other civilian administrators, this sterling silver box with its engraved UN symbol lid signed by the legendary silversmith Habib Joo is a remarkable, museum-worthy relic of early UN peacekeeping history.
