Description
Downscaled resin replica of the Farnese Hercules. This statue, a 3rd century AD Roman copy of a 4th century BC Greek bronze, depicts Hercules at rest following the completion of his 12 labors. This is represented by the skin of the Nemean lion, the plunder from his first labor, and the Apples of the Hesperides which he clutches behind his back, the prize of his final labor. While the Greek original symbolized triumph, the Roman copy’s location in a bathhouse recontextualized the piece as a reflection of the patrons’ leisure and relaxation. This replica faithfully replicates the details and material texture of the original. A signature on the back reads A. Santini, the midcentury craftsman who made this and many other reproductions. 5.5 lbs.
